Joy as Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom After 56 Days in Captivity

There was widespread relief on Friday as the pupils and teachers abducted during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State regained their freedom after spending 56 days in captivity.
The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when armed assailants invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; L.A. Primary School; and Community Grammar School, Esiele, abducting 39 pupils, seven teachers and a two-year-old child.
Their release brings an end to weeks of anxiety for their families, residents and the Oyo State Government, who had repeatedly appealed for their safe return.
The rescue followed sustained security operations involving military and other security agencies. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga disclosed that eight suspected kidnappers were arrested while several others were killed during the operation.
The abduction drew national and international attention, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the safety of schools and the rising wave of kidnappings across the country.
The released pupils and teachers are expected to undergo medical examination, counselling and debriefing before reuniting fully with their families.
The successful rescue has been welcomed by residents and stakeholders, who have called on the government to strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
