Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that his administration would not succumb to terrorism following the abduction of pupils, students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, even as the government remains willing to engage the abductors to facilitate the victims’ release.

Speaking with journalists on Monday, Governor Makinde confirmed that 32 persons were kidnapped during the attack, comprising seven students of Community Secondary School, 18 pupils, and seven teachers from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School in Oriire Local Government Area.

The Governor urged the media and the public to report the incident responsibly and avoid sensationalism capable of escalating tension, emphasizing that the government’s primary focus is the safe and swift rescue of all abducted persons.

Makinde also revealed that an operational centre has been set up at the Oyo State Police Headquarters, where the Commissioner of Police would coordinate activities and issue verified updates on the rescue efforts.

On measures to strengthen security, the Governor disclosed that the two surveillance aircraft acquired by the state government have arrived in Nigeria and are currently being reassembled by the Nigerian Air Force, adding that the aircraft are expected to become operational before the end of June.

Governor Makinde reassured residents of the state government’s unwavering commitment to restoring security and ensuring the safe return of the abducted victims.
