Makinde Demands Action on Abducted Borno Children, Vows to Act on Oriire Report… As committee submits reports
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to rescue more than 40 children reportedly abducted in Borno State on the same day as the Oriire abduction.
Makinde made the call while receiving the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the abduction of students and teachers from Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area.
The Governor said no Nigerian child should live in fear while pursuing education, stressing the need for stronger security measures to protect schools and communities across the country.
He said the commission was constituted to establish how the Oriire attack occurred, examine available intelligence and the response of relevant institutions, and identify possible intelligence, administrative and operational failures.
Makinde assured that his administration would study the commission’s recommendations carefully, make its position public and outline specific actions to be taken.
He added that recommendations relating to federal security agencies and other relevant authorities would be taken up with the appropriate institutions, while issues within the jurisdiction of the state and local governments would also be addressed.
The Governor, however, said sensitive information that could endanger lives or compromise ongoing security operations would be protected but stressed that confidentiality must not be used as a shield against accountability.
Earlier, Chairman of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, retired Justice Professor Mojeed Owoade, disclosed that the commission heard evidence from 72 witnesses, including victims of the attack, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, experts and other stakeholders.
Professor Owoade identified the review of laws and the management of forest reserves, particularly the Old Oyo National Park, as one of the major recommendations of the commission.
He expressed optimism that the Oyo State Government would give the report the necessary and expeditious attention to strengthen the protection of schools and communities across the state.
The Oriire abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, while the victims were rescued on July 10, 2026, after spending several weeks in captivity.
