Oyo State Government Bans Trailers from Newly Commissioned Expressway.

The Oyo State Government has prohibited heavy-duty trucks and trailers from using the recently inaugurated Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso Expressway.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, explained that the decision was made to protect the integrity of the road, which is vital for improving agrarian transportation, trade, and intercity commuting.

He emphasized that the Ministry of Public Works acted swiftly to prevent potential damage to the expressway, which was constructed specifically for lighter vehicles like cars and buses.

According to the Commissioner for Public Works, Professor Dawoud Sangodoyin, the ban follows the diversion of heavy-duty vehicles from the ongoing construction on the federal Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomosho Road. He underscored the economic importance of the expressway, stating, “This road was primarily designed to support agrarian transportation, traders, and commuters, all aiming to drive the development of Oyo State’s economy.”

He also warned that heavy trailers could undermine the structural integrity of the road, despite its durability, compromising its intended purpose.

“Only buses, cabstars, and cars are permitted to use the route until further notice,” Professor Sangodoyin added.

The 76.67-kilometer expressway, which cuts through challenging terrain of lakes and rocks, was commissioned on May 30, 2024. It is expected to boost transportation and economic activities within Oyo State.
