Why Couples Should Communicate About Choosing Their Next of Kin, Says Popular Ibadan Broadcaster on ‘Ilubinrin
Couples have been advised to openly communicate and reach a mutual understanding on who their next of kin should be, as a way to strengthen trust in their relationships. Ibadan-based broadcaster, Afolakemi Arowolo, known as “Folake Mighty,” emphasized that in marriage, the next of kin should ideally be one’s spouse, as they are typically the closest person in one’s life.
Arowolo, who co-hosts the popular couples’ program Kilarigbo on Lagelu FM 96.7 alongside “Rapping Daddy,” shared this insight while featuring on Ilubinrin, an all-female show on Splash FM 105.5. Speaking on the topic “Why Do Some Men Refuse to Make Their Wives Their Next of Kin,” she encouraged men to communicate openly with their wives, assuring them of their trust and intentions. Arowolo noted that lack of trust and feelings of insecurity are often reasons why some men hesitate to designate their wives as next of kin.
Adding to the discussion, family lawyer Barrister Olapo clarified the distinctions between a next of kin, a beneficiary, and someone entitled to a person’s will, particularly in cases of death or emergencies. He dispelled the common misconception that a next of kin automatically inherits property, educating listeners on the actual role and responsibilities of a next of kin.
Ilubinrin is a program focused on women’s and girls’ issues, broadcast every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Splash FM 105.5 and anchored by broadcast journalist Temilade Aloko.
