Okebadan Exclusive: Chief Remi Ibrahim Babalola Applauds Ibadan’s Legacy and Shares Life Journey By Temilade Aloko.

In an exclusive episode of Okebadan, Chief Remi Ibrahim Babalola, the Bada Balogun of Ibadanland and former President of the prestigious Jericho Businessmen’s Club, passionately celebrated his hometown, Ibadan, highlighting its uniqueness in governance, chieftaincy traditions, and its harmonious relationship with other tribes. According to him, Ibadan stands out as the most notable city in Yorubaland due to its immense contributions to the region.

“Ibadan is exceptional,” he stated. “It is a town for all—accommodating, peaceful, and a beacon of Western politics, even beyond Nigeria.” He compared the city to Lagos, emphasizing its peaceful atmosphere and its vibrant yet balanced hustle and bustle.

Childhood Memories in Ibadan

Chief Babalola nostalgically recounted his childhood in Ibadan, describing it as a time of joy and adventure. He reminisced about following masquerades like Alapansanpa and Oloolu during festivals, the thrilling euphoria of the celebrations, and playing the popular local game okoto. He fondly recalled renting bicycles from “Baba Onikeke,” who would hold their shirts as collateral until the bikes were returned.

Hailing from the Ogidi Gbogbo family in Ode Aje, Chief Babalola shared the history of his ancestral lineage. Ogidi, a warrior and contemporary of Ibadan’s legendary Oluyole, had a dispute with Oluyole but eventually reconciled, settling in Ode Aje from Kudeti.

Academic and Career Journey

Chief Babalola attended Bodija International Nursery School, St. Peter’s Primary School, Aremo, and Community Grammar School, Akanran. He later pursued a degree in Business Administration at the University of Benin and completed his youth service in Akwa Ibom State.

His career began as a branch manager at Abiola Bookshop in Kaduna. He subsequently joined Wema Bank in Lagos, where he rose to the position of Managing Director of Wema Securities and Finance. Later, he established his own firm. He further enhanced his career with a master’s degree from Olabisi Onabanjo University and professional certifications, including membership in the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers.

Reflections on Hard Work and Self-Reliance

Reflecting on his journey, Chief Babalola emphasized the value of hard work and self-reliance. Unlike today, where parents often influence their children’s career paths, he shared how he studied diligently to succeed. “Getting a job in those days was tough, especially if you came from a humble background,” he said, recounting how his audacity and determination earned him his first job at Abiola Bookshop.

Insights on Investment and Risk Management

As an expert in investment and risk management, Chief Babalola discussed the challenges facing the industry in Nigeria. He advised investors to seek professional guidance before venturing into the volatile yet profitable sector, stressing the importance of understanding the market. He encouraged Nigerian youths to explore investment opportunities, though he lamented that the current focus on quick money often deters them from lucrative long-term ventures.

Commitment to Family and Community Development

As the Mogaji of his family house and now Bada Balogun of Ibadanland, Chief Babalola has united his family, resolved disputes, and established a cooperative society to support family businesses. He also spearheaded the provision of social amenities both at home and in the village.

Discussing his journey through the Ibadan chieftaincy ladder, he explained that his former title, Jagun Balogun, marked the beginning of his path toward the Olubadan stool. “The Jagun Balogun title is akin to a military rank, signifying leadership and responsibility. Today, as Bada Balogun, my focus remains on town development and conflict resolution under the purview of the Olubadan,” he noted.

The Role of Jericho Businessmen’s Club

Chief Babalola spoke highly of the Jericho Businessmen’s Club, describing it as a vital support system for Ibadan. The club provides loans to traders, supports government initiatives, and prioritizes the welfare of the city. Membership is exclusive to accomplished Ibadan indigenes who have attained executive roles in their professions.

Personal Passions

Outside his professional and communal commitments, Chief Babalola enjoys traveling, writing novels, watching films, and playing golf. A devout Muslim, he is a member of NASFAT and participates in the annual Umrah pilgrimage.

Chief Remi Ibrahim Babalola’s life is a testament to hard work, community service, and an unwavering passion for the progress of Ibadan. His dedication to preserving the city’s heritage while fostering its development remains an inspiration to many.
