“Legacy of Olugbode: Ibadan’s Storied Past and Timeless Palace

OLUGBODE 1

When discussing the families and baales (chiefs) who have governed the ancient town of Ibadan, the Olugbode family stands out as one of the most recognized, primarily due to the palace built in 1835 by Baale Ajayi Oyesile Olugbode.

The palace, known as Aafin Olugbode, was constructed over 200 years ago at Ita Baale Olugbode. The name Olugbode is derived from Oluwatigbode. The palace still stands strong today and can confidently claim that no modern building matches its quality.

According to Mogaji Olugbode, Teslim Olugbode, Baale Ajayi Oyesile Olugbode (1861-1864), hailed from Kuta. He arrived in Ibadan as a warrior in 1824 A.D. Oyesile became Baale of Ibadan in 1851 A.D., reigning between 1851 and 1864. His reign was characterized by peace, economic prosperity, and unity among the Ibadan chiefs. Ibadan gained fame during his rule, winning all wars fought during that period, including the Ara war, Koro war, Ijero war, Efon war, and Ijaye war of 1859 to 1862, led by Balogun Ibikunle.

Balogun Ibikunle, a powerful and influential warrior, remained loyal to Baale Oyesile, also known as Baale Olugbode, ensuring a peaceful tenure for the baale. Christianity was introduced to Ibadan in 1851, and Baale Oyesile welcomed it with open arms, providing support and land for the construction of churches. His generosity led to the adoption of the name “Olugbode.” Baale Oyesile Olugbode’s reign was marked by peace, and he passed away peacefully at an old age during the Kutuje war of 1862 to 1864.

The principal chiefs of Baale Oyesile Olugbode included Balogun Ibikunle (Balogun), Balogun Ogunmola (Otun Balogun), Balogun Osundina (Osi Balogun), Balogun Akere (Ashipa Balogun), Balogun Orowusi (Ekerin Balogun), and Aare Latosa (Aare-Ago Balogun), all esteemed warlords who commanded respect and influence.

Therefore, the oriki (praise poetry) of Ibadan, which states “Ibadan ilu Ajayi,” refers to Baale Ajayi Oyesile Olugbode.

The Aafin Olugbode stands as a cultural monument and a tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world. Whenever you find yourself in Ibadan, the Olugbode Palace is a must-visit destination.
