Ladoja Crowned 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland in Historic Ceremony.

Ibadan, 26 September 2025 — In a gathering marked by tradition, dignity, and unity, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja was yesterday crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland at the ancient Mapo Hall, Ibadan.
The coronation brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, and citizens to celebrate a new era for Ibadan’s monarchy.
The Coronation and Presentation of Staff of Office
At exactly 3:05 p.m., Governor Seyi Makinde formally presented the staff and certificate of office to Oba Ladoja, sealing his installation as Olubadan.
Makinde, invoking the powers of the Chief Law of Oyo State, said:
“In exercise of the power conferred on me as the Governor … I hereby present the staff of office to Oba … His Imperial Majesty … Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa I.”
He added that all past disputes around Ibadan’s traditional institution were now behind them, declaring that the succession process is now sacrosanct. Makinde prayed for Ladoja’s reign to bring peace, unity, and development to Ibadanland and Oyo State.

President Tinubu’s Remarks
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attended the ceremony and delivered a speech praising Ladoja’s perseverance and the importance of the occasion.
He said the economic reforms of his administration are “turning the corner” and promised Nigerians would soon see results.
To Ladoja, Tinubu said:
“I pray that God will grant you more years of joy, prosperity, and relevance.”
He also recalled their shared political history, including Ladoja’s struggles such as his impeachment, and celebrated his resilience. Tinubu thanked the people of Ibadanland for their support and remarked that his presence felt like a homecoming.

What Happened at Mapo Hall
Mapo Hall shook with celebration. Traditional rites earlier in the day included the placing of the Akoko leaves on Ladoja’s head at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba — a symbolic act of purity and acceptance. He also passed through the Ose-Meji Temple to receive the crown before moving to Mapo Hall for the final rites.
At Mapo Hall, the atmosphere was grand: elders, chiefs, royal fathers, religious leaders, and politicians filled the hall. Christian and Muslim clerics led prayers. Many governors, former governors, and traditional rulers were in attendance, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade; and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye.

Colour, Culture, and Celebration
The coronation was not only about rites and speeches, it was also a festival of Ibadan culture. The Oyo State Cultural Troupe thrilled the audience with traditional dance performances, while Fuji star Taye Currency entertained the crowd with energetic music.
After the coronation, people moved to the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium where a grand reception was held. Popular Fuji musician Abass Obesere performed for the cheering audience. Across the city, celebrations lit up every corner. At Isale Osi, in front of the new king’s compound, Fuji maestro Rasheed Ayinde Merenge entertained the people. At the old palace, it was Askari Fuji who kept the Ibadan Mogajis dancing late into the evening.

What Oba Ladoja Asked
In his acceptance speech, Oba Ladoja made several key points and requests:
- He asked President Tinubu to make the creation of Ibadan State a reality before May 2027.
- He pledged service to the people of Ibadan, Oyo State, Yorubaland, Nigeria, and Africa.
- He warned traditional title holders not to engage in misdeeds such as snatching lands or wives, promising to enforce the law against offenders.
- He emphasized that kingship should go beyond “wearing beads and acquiring women”, insisting his reign will be about diligent service.
- He spoke of urban renewal, saying communities turning into slums would be rebuilt, and hinted at launching an economic development programme to revive businesses and create jobs.
Oba Ladoja also expressed gratitude to the Olubadan-in-Council and kingmakers for unanimously endorsing his nomination.
