Ibadan, My Pride: Mutalubi Ojo Adebayo, SAN, Reflects on Childhood, Career, and Legacy on ‘Oke’badan
In a recent captivating episode of Oke’badan, the popular radio show hosted by the ever-charismatic Temilade Aloko, the former Oyo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mutalubi Ojo Adebayo, SAN, shared intimate details of his childhood and illustrious career. The episode was a nostalgic journey into the heart of Ibadan’s rich history, as Adebayo reflected on his deep connection to the ancient city.
Growing up in the Ita Ege area of Ibadan, Adebayo proudly spoke about his roots, describing himself as a true son of the soil, with lineage on both sides deeply rooted in Ibadan. Despite traveling far and wide, he praised the peaceful cohabitation, affordable lifestyle, and numerous educational institutions that make Ibadan unique.
One of his fondest memories was the local game of Okoto, played with snail shells, which he and his friends enjoyed during their childhood. Adebayo’s educational journey began at Wesley Practising School, then to Urban Day Secondary School, and eventually the University of Ibadan, where he studied Law.
Adebayo also shared how his initial pursuit of Mass Communication at Lagos State University (LASU) was mocked by the late Professor Jelili Omotola, SAN, which pushed him to change his path. His legal career took off during his NYSC days under the mentorship of Bayo Aluko, SAN, one of Kaduna’s top lawyers at the time. He later returned to Ibadan, joining notable law firms, including the chambers of Olujinmi and Akeredolu (late Governor of Ondo State), before establishing his practice with Kasim Gbadamosi, SAN, in 2002.
Reflecting on his time as the Attorney-General, Adebayo humorously described himself as an “accidental politician,” a term coined by his former boss, the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who saw him as a “professional in politics, not a professional politician.” He recounted the tense political drama when Baba Adedibu sought to impeach Governor Rashidi Ladoja, during which he and Niyi Akintola, SAN, successfully challenged the attempt in court.
Adebayo didn’t shy away from critiquing the current Oyo State government, particularly in the areas of cleanliness and transparency. He emphasized the importance of the fear of God in the legal profession, urging lawyers and judges to prioritize justice and humanity over material gain.
A passionate traveler and avid reader, Adebayo is also a devoted fan of Barrister Ayinde’s music. Despite being a devout Muslim, he maintains a harmonious marriage with his Christian wife, showcasing a beautiful example of interfaith unity.
Reflecting on his role in the 2023 presidential election tribunal, where he was part of the legal team representing President Bola Tinubu, Adebayo confidently stated that the opposition lacked a substantial case against the president.
The episode of Oke’badan not only celebrated Adebayo’s achievements but also served as a testament to the spirit of Ibadan—a city that continues to inspire greatness in its people.
