Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has officially received the report on the explosion that occurred on January 16, 2024, at Adeyi Avenue, Bodija, Ibadan. The comprehensive report, comprising findings from Medical, Security, and Engineering Teams, was presented to the governor on Tuesday at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Briefing Room of the Governor’s Office following the report presentation, retired Commissioner of Police and Special Adviser on Security to the Governor, Fatai Owoseni, disclosed that three individuals of interest have been identified in connection with the incident. Additionally, Owoseni clarified that the explosion occurred on Aderinola Street, not Dejo Oyelese Street, as previously reported. He specified that the epicenter of the explosion was at No. 8A and No. 8B.

Owoseni revealed that the explosive substance responsible for the blast was a “Water Gel Type Based Explosive” and that the explosion was triggered by an electric spark, with footage captured by a Closed Circuit Television in one of the affected houses providing insight into the incident.

Assuring the public, Owoseni stated that the state government would ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. He also mentioned plans to verify the immigration status of the individuals involved, noting that a significant number of them are from Mali.

Furthermore, Owoseni discussed an Executive Order signed by the governor regarding the safe handling and storage of harmful substances in the state. He urged residents to share relevant information with the Special Adviser’s office.

Engr. Mbim Okutinyang, chairman of the Nigeria Institute of Structural Engineers and lead coordinator of the structural integrity assessment team, reported that out of 282 houses assessed, only four would require demolition due to severe damage. However, seismic reports are still pending.

Prof. Temitope Alonge, Head of the Emergency Operation Centre, provided updates on medical treatment for victims. He stated that 80 individuals were treated across various hospitals, with five remaining hospitalized. Alonge reassured that most patients are expected to be discharged within the next week.

Regarding radioactivity tests, Alonge confirmed that the site has been cleared of any abnormal radiation levels, as verified by the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Agency.
