Comrade Omolola Alamu Inaugurated as Oyo State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Vows to Empower Women Journalists.
In a landmark event held at the Dapo Aderogba Hall, Press Centre, Iyaganku GRA, Ibadan, Comrade Omolola Alamu was officially inaugurated as the new Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Oyo State chapter. The ceremony, graced by notable figures including the Vice President of NAWOJ (Zone B), Mrs. Adeola Adekunle, the Zonal Secretary, Mrs. Adeola Adewole, and NUJ Chairman Comrade Ademola Babalola, marked a significant moment for women in journalism within the state.
In her inaugural speech, Comrade Alamu expressed her gratitude for the trust and confidence placed in her by her colleagues. She acknowledged the unique challenges faced by women journalists, such as gender bias and harassment, but highlighted their resilience and dedication.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our journey as women in journalism,” Alamu stated. “I promise to work tirelessly to justify this trust and to amplify our voices, promote our interests, and create opportunities for our growth and development.”
Comrade Alamu outlined her vision for NAWOJ Oyo State, emphasizing inclusivity, diversity, and equity. She called for a culture of mentorship, support, and collaboration, alongside active advocacy to address pressing issues affecting women journalists and their communities.
The newly elected Chairperson paid tribute to the pioneering women journalists who paved the way, including the NAWOJ Oyo State’s first Chairperson, Mrs. Bose Oyewole. She also acknowledged the support from male colleagues and the significant contributions of past chairpersons.
Alamu expressed her appreciation to the NUJ National President, Chief Dr. Chris Isiguzo, MFR, and the NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajia Aisha K. Bura, for their leadership in restoring peace and stability to the Oyo State chapter. She also extended special thanks to her mentors, Dr. Bimbo Oyetunde and Hajia Ify Omowole.
In closing, Comrade Alamu called for unity and focus among her colleagues, urging them to strive for a greater association that honors its rich history rooted in Ibadan. “Let us rise together and make our mark on the world of journalism. Together we can,” she concluded, setting a hopeful and determined tone for her tenure.
