Christ’s Chapel, UCH Marks 70th Anniversary — Calls for National Rebirth, Donates ₦1 Million to Indigent Patients

By Temilade Aloko

The Senior Pastor of Christ’s Chapel, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Reverend Professor Biobele Brown, has called on church leaders in Nigeria to rise to their responsibility of building responsible men and women grounded in the teachings of Jesus Christ, in order to bring about national rebirth and progress.

Reverend Brown made the call during a press conference held to officially flag off activities marking the 70th anniversary celebration of Christ’s Chapel, UCH.

Reacting to questions from journalists, the chairan planning Committee,  Prof Olayinka Olawoye noted that only godliness and righteousness can rescue Nigeria from any form of crisis or external threat, including the alleged warning of a possible invasion by the United States over claims of Christian genocide in the country.

“The church must take the lead in raising godly men and women who will shape our nation’s moral and spiritual direction. Only through righteousness can Nigeria experience true peace and progress,”.

As part of activities commemorating the Platinum Jubilee celebration, Christ’s Chapel announced a donation of ₦1 million to the management of the University College Hospital for the Alaanu Foundation, an initiative dedicated to supporting indigent patients.

While receiving the cheque donation, the Chief Medical Director of UCH, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, expressed appreciation to the anniversary committee for their generosity and continued support to the hospital community.

Reverend Brown also emphasized that individuals working for the chapel do so as volunteers, serving God and humanity without financial reward.

70 Years of God’s Faithfulness

Reverend Brown highlighted the humble beginnings of Christ’s Chapel, which started as a small fellowship founded by Dr. Ralph Schram, a British medical doctor and house officer at UCH, alongside his wife Enid. The first service was held on November 13, 1955, at the hall of what is now Alexander Brown Hall.

Over the years, the chapel has grown from meeting in temporary venues — including the School of Nursing Hall and a lecture theatre in the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine — to having its own permanent structure, commissioned on May 4, 2003.

The Senior Pastor commended the management of UCH and the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, for their long-standing partnership and support, describing the chapel’s seventy-year journey as “a testimony of God’s faithfulness.”

Week-Long Celebration Activities

The week-long Platinum Jubilee celebration began with the press conference and will include:

A special Platinum Prayer Meeting anchored by a guest minister.

A missions outreach to the Galilee Foundation, which rehabilitates youths rescued from the streets.

A novelty football match at the UCH Sports Field.

Special presentations by the chapel’s primary and secondary schools.

A medical missions outreach providing free medical checkups and treatment to members of the public.

A musical concert featuring spirit-filled worship.

The celebration will climax with a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, November 16, 2025, where members, friends, and well-wishers will gather to glorify God for seventy years of His faithfulness.

Reverend Professor Biobele Brown concluded by appreciating all past and present members of Christ’s Chapel for their dedication and service, praying that God continues to use the church as a vessel of healing, hope, and transformation.
