AFCON Preview: Equatorial Guinea Coach Highlights Pressure on Ivory Coast

AFCON

Equatorial Guinea’s coach, Juan Micha, emphasizes that the spotlight is firmly on Ivory Coast in the lead-up to their crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) clash today. Ivory Coast, playing as hosts, must secure a victory against group leaders Equatorial Guinea to ensure progression from AFCON Group A.

Micha predicts a challenging match for both teams but highlights the added pressure on Ivory Coast, stating, “It will be difficult for both teams, but more so for Ivory Coast because they are under pressure to win.” Equatorial Guinea currently leads the group after defeating Guinea-Bissau 4-2, following their initial 1-1 draw with Nigeria. A single point against Ivory Coast would secure their spot in the knockout stage, but Micha aims for an upset win to eliminate the favored hosts.

“We know they’ll come at us, which will allow us to surprise them in their own stadium. The pressure is on them, not us,” Micha asserts.

Ivory Coast’s recent 1-0 loss to Nigeria has intensified their need for a victory to avoid an early exit. Although Ivory Coast has a historical advantage, winning both previous encounters in 2012 and 2022, Equatorial Guinea is brimming with confidence after their impressive performance in Group A.

Approaching the match with composure, Micha states, “We will not wait for them; we will approach this match calmly.” The game at Alassane Ouattara Stadium kicks off at 6 pm local time on Monday, coinciding with the Nigeria vs. Guinea-Bissau match. Nigeria, currently second in Group A, aims for at least a draw to advance after drawing 1-1 and winning 0-1 in their first two games against Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast, respectively.

The Ivorians, who have demonstrated significant support for the host country in their previous matches, would face considerable disappointment with a loss.
